New York Giants at Yankee Stadium, 1960. "One last thing I want to say," Grier told LIFE, "is that I objected on the field to anyone who would deliberately go out to hurt a player on another team. Now, football is a dangerous, violent sport. People get hurt. But take a player like [Cleveland Hall of Famer] Jim Brown. Opponents would deliberately go out and, after a play, twist his ankles and do other things to try and hurt him. When I saw my guys try that stuff, I would pull them aside and say, 'We don't have to win game like that.' So today, whenever I see a referee throw a flag for a late hit or whatever, I am so happy. Because here's a guy, a good ball player, and someone intentionally tries to hurt him, to damage his ability to provide for his family. At that point, you're not just messing up that guy, you're messing up the game. I wouldn't have it. We won fair, or not at all. That's the only way I knew how to play."
